A few words in verse 23 just leap off the page at me. “The hour has come..” These are actually quite significant words in John’s gospel. Why now has his time come, and why during his triumphant entry into Jerusalem did he declare this? The Palm Sunday parade that day attracted a large crowd of people – not just Jews, but people from all over the world gathering to worship God at the Passover Feast. John records here that some Greeks wanted an audience with Jesus. We are not even told if that meeting ever took place, but when Jesus hears that they want to see him, he suddenly declares : “The hour has come”! Why did he choose this moment to declare this?
